A Region to Watch

York County is the region just south of Charlotte’s Uptown Banking and Financial Center and the heart of one of the highest growth corridors in the Carolinas.   Located just across the state line in South Carolina, it is an integral part of the Charlotte, North Carolina region, today the 2nd largest financial center in the nation and home to nine Fortune 500 headquarters.  In addition to its proximity to Charlotte, York County has the fiscal advantage of being located in South Carolina where a stable and reasonable tax structure creates a climate that encourages growth.

Infrastructure and Transportation

Interstate 77
, running north-south, is a natural growth corridor in the County.  Currently, York County is experiencing explosive growth along this corridor, particularly around Rock Hill, the commercial and financial center of York County.  US 321, also a north-south route, dissects the County in half, offering secondary access.

The expansion of Highway 5 and Highway 161 from two lanes to five lanes (expected completion in 2007) will serve as the County’s first true east west commercial route.   This new corridor will connect Interstate 85 and Interstate 77, allowing better east-west access through the County, in essence, serving as the beginning of an outer highway loop around the Charlotte metro area.

Serving 23 million passengers a year, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the 6th largest major airline hub in the nation and is located 25 minutes from Rock Hill.

The Sanctuary, a 1,300-acre community on the shores of Lake Wylie, is one of the most unique developments in the region where twenty million-dollar homes located on nature “preserves” are part of the development.

Yet another luxury community in York County is The Palisades, covering 1,500 acres of a Lake Wylie peninsula just south of N.C. 49. It offers a Nicklaus Design championship golf course, country club, equestrian center, soccer complex and nature trails.

Leisure:  Lakes, Parks and World Class Golf

Ideally situated for work and play, residents enjoy numerous recreational activities including boating on Lake Wylie, hiking and playing on some of the nation’s best golf courses.  With teams in the NFL, IHL and triple-A baseball as well as the new NASCAR headquarters, the region is recognized as a national sports market.  Paramount’s Carowinds theme park straddles the N.C./S.C. state line and offers summer season entertainment, roller coasters, and a waterpark.

One of the first initiatives of its kind, the Museum of Life and Environment (MLE) is being planned right in York County by environmental visionaries on 400 acres along the Catawba River and will serve as a national model for ecologically, socially and economically intelligent architecture and community design.
